GSHS Biology Teacher Named
"Best in Colorado"

The National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) named Glenwood Springs High School (GSHS) teacher Justin Silcox the 2017-18 recipient of the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (OBTA) for Colorado. NABT’s announcement letter to the school explained that this award means that “Justin Silcox is one of the best biology teachers in the country.” The association attempts to recognize an outstanding biology educator for grades 7-12 from each of the 50 states every year.

Silcox has been teaching at GSHS since 2012. GSHS Principal Paul Freeman noted a few characteristics that make Silcox such a great teacher: “Justin brings the same intensity to teaching science as he does to competing in Nordic skiing. It's not possible to knock him even slightly out of his stride. He is noted for his meticulously detailed approach and his zen calm.”

The NABT award letter also expressed gratitude for GSHS, noting “the administrative support and academic climate that cultivates outstanding science teaching.”

“I'm honored to receive this award,” Silcox said. “I really appreciate the opportunity to share my passion for biology with Glenwood Springs High School students and to collaborate with colleagues at GSHS, the Roaring Fork School District, and the Colorado Association of Biology Teachers.”Silcox will be honored on Saturday, November 10 at the NABT Professional Development Conference in San Diego, CA along with all 2017-18 OBTA recipients.
